gcc failed to report the memory problem

Hi

I used gcc-3.3.1 to compile fairly large program. But gcc faild to compile
without giving any error massage. The cc1 process hang for almost one hour
before it was killed manually.

After a close look, it turns out that gcc was trying to create an assmbely file
( .S ) in the /var/tmp directory. Since it wasn't enough space left in
/var/tmp, that caused for cc1 process to hang without giving any error or warning
massage.

I used gcc-3.2.3 and gcc-3.0.4 and they all had the same problem. 

I think this is a very silly bug in gcc.
