I got the same error when compiling glibc-2.2.4, 
in file sysdeps/ieee754/dbl-64/s_tan.c, line 466,
with gcc-3.2.3.  I was using options -O -m4 -ml 
when building glibc.  My gcc-3.2.3 was configured
similarly to your gcc-3.1.  I had not applied the patches
recommended by the linux-sh project; perhaps those
resolve the problem, I'll see.
