Confirming/Closing GNATS reports

Hello all,

I'd like to help verify the bugs in the database (and
maybe help reduce the overall bug count!).

I've noticed that there are a good number of reports
in GNATS for older versions of gcc (e.g. 3.0, 2.95.3)
that don't appear to have been checked against newer
versions of gcc. Many of these PRs are against rarer
platforms, so checking them can be a bit tough.

I'm wondering if there's any consensus on how to do
this. Using cross-compilers seems to be the easiest
method to check on many of these (particularly ICEs),
but I don't know if people think that's a valid
substitute for testing a native build. Also, is it
considered reasonable just to test 3.3 on these sort
of target specific bugs, or does one need to test
against mainline too?
