2.95.3 did not accept the smaller testcase either:
tin:~/src/gnu/gcctest>~/ia32_linux_gcc2_95/bin/gcc pr6785.cc
pr6785.cc: In function `void f()':
pr6785.cc:13: no matching function for call to `size (const char[4])'
pr6785.cc:14: `buf' undeclared (first use this function)
pr6785.cc:14: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
pr6785.cc:14: for each function it appears in.)
But it looks like it rejected even before the second call to size.
