I *would* prefer that the kernel code change to use a temporary, as
suggested by Andrew.  That would be most future-proof against gcc
deprecating this extension (which has been suggested before).

I guess I'll see if there's something I can do, but I'm not promising
that this will ever be changed to work like like it used to.
