Why must the build system always be broken?

Hi!

I wonder why I encounter build problems on hpux-11.i every second time
I try to get cvs-gcc built. Today I lost several hours finally failing to
obtain a C++ compiler while trying to build today's cvs with itself and
newest binutils.

I find this
a) rather odd
b) unnecessary
c) very annoying

I feel like there must be some more robust configuration
and/or a more reliable solution for the build system.

How about a little more testing and discipline with checkins
that affect the config?
