this bug is weird, I can only reproduce it on powerpc-apple-darwin6.6, on i686-unknown-
openbsd3.1 or i686-pc-linux-gnu, I get the instantiation, openbsd and linux supports 
weak symbols so this looks like not having weak symbols problem.

Note this is all on the mainline (20030701).
