    Has there been any response to Daniel's message?  FWIW, I agree with what he said.
    
    The mips options were discussed on the gcc lists a while ago.  In the end, it was agreed that the architecture flags should not change the ABI (and therefore should not change the register size).  It's useful to have "mips-linux-gnu -mips4" generate 32-bit MIPS IV code, for example.  Very few configurations can handle a change in register size gracefully.
    
    Note that 3.4 will support a mips64-linux-gnu configuration.
