Really it is not a GCC problem or MYGWIN problem (see mygwin bug 765526: <https://
sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=765526&group_id=2435&atid=102435>.  It 
really is <MSVCRT "feature"> switch to using binary mode instead.
