c/7871: ICE on legal code, global register variables problems

It has been several months since I last looked at this problem. I ran
into trouble reproducing your problem, since the only hardware I have is
x86, and your program doesn't use global register variables for x86.
Also, I wasn't able to reproduce the same problem with the other
testcases I had. Things are getting better though. I recently got a
guest account on a m68k-linux machine, and I should have powerpc
hardware within a week or two, and then I will have a better chance of
making progress on this issue. There have also been some additional
problems reports for similar issues since then, which may help by giving
us more testcases. I haven't looked at any of them yet though.
There are also other issues here. I've been taking a lot of time off
from gcc work, and when I am doing gcc work there is always more work to
do than I have time for, so I am not sure when I will be able to get
back to this.
By the way, the gcc-gnats address probably isn't useful anymore, as we
have since switched from gnats to bugzilla.
