Ah.. that was it... took out the -fstack-protector and it compiled with 
gcc 3.3

Reading specs from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/powerpc-ibm-aix5.2.0.0/3.3/specs
Configured with: ../configure
Thread model: aix
gcc version 3.3

but it back and this was the more verbose error...
