gcc version 2.96 reports an error

Hello,
 
I am using gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-81).
 
I am getting a compile error "cannot convert const char * to const
wchar_t *" when trying to compile an open source software. 
 
The same software can be built properly with Red Hat Linux 7.3 (kernel
2.4.18-3) and gcc version 3.0.2. 
 
Is there any solution to the problem when using gcc 2.96? Please do let
me know.
