Found the code that caused the problems for irix. It was this part of
Jeff's recent patch:

       * caller-save (init_caller_save): Restructure slightly to
        avoid lots of silly RTL generation.

When I reverted just that bit, my bootstrap continued further (still
not done yet, but going)...

Not quite sure why this is causing errors for the mips port yet though.
Currently happens with any 64-bit mips toolchain.
