reorder bug in 3.0

Given this, it sounds to me like we can't fix this for 3.0.2.  It
just seems like the changes are too invasive.

It would be really nice to get this fixed in 3.0.3.  Andrew, would you
be willing to keep working on this in the hopes that we can get a patch
together for that release?
