mips-elf-gcc (Cross compiler, running under Solaris 2.6)

When I compile using

   mips-elf-gcc -mabi=32 ....

I get the error message

   cc1: Invalid option `abi=32'

though, according to the documentation on the gcc homepage, this 
option should be accepted.
