FWIW, the bootstrap eventually crashed with the same problem configuring 
libjava that I reported on Tuesday.

Using the resulting compiler to build stage 1 of a new bootstrap eventually 
yields the same crash compiling _bb that I experienced earlier.  I'll file a 
report in GNATS as you suggested.  Meantime, I'll experiment to see if this 
compiler is capable of building GNU libc and the Linux kernel.
