IIRC, the problem we had before was that of libtool getting
--with-gnu-ld from the top-level configure because it noticed the
sources of GNU ld were available, so it would be built.  But ltconfig
took that as meaning that GNU ld was in use by the build-machine
compiler, so binutils and other libtool-using were mis-configured.
IIRC, libtool has been adjusted since then to double-check that the
chosen linker is indeed GNU ld or not, fixing that problem.
