Problem with Global Objects/Classes and Libraries

Thank you.  That did it.  I still have bugs to work out, but I'm no longer
getting core dumps when I access those global objects.

This is where you lose.  You must link the shared library with g++
-shared, so that GCC gets a chance to link in the code that runs
dynamic initializers.
