merge-with-binutils documentation is wrong/incomplete

You can (and should) always send patches for them to
gcc-patches@gcc.gnu.org.

You've been doing pretty much the right thing so far (even though I
can't say your approach to it was pleasant :-) : trying to find the
correct answers.  Now that you've got them (or at least some of them),
download the GCC WWW CVS tree and start posting patches :-)
