        in RANLIB_FOR_TARGET, EXTRA_HOST_FLAGS, EXTRA_TARGET_FLAGS,
        EXTRA_GCC_FLAGS, $(DO_X) targets only when the RANLIB is set.

to be responsible for

make[1]: *** Recursive variable `RANLIB' references itself (eventually).  Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/castro/street/rth/gcc/build/axp/libiberty'
make: *** [do-clean] Error 1

Would you have a look at fixing it, please?
