Makefile bugs in gcc-3.0

I think it is supported (in theory) but not recommended.
The fact that nobody does this regularly means that it will be broken
a lot.

Anyway I've reproduced this problem and I'm just waiting for a bit of
spare time to fix it.  Perhaps this afternoon.
