Mandrake Linux 8, kernel 2.4.2, glibc 2.2.2 running on P3

I've done as follows:
tar zvxf gcc-3.0.tar.gz
mkdir tmp-egcs
cd tmp-egcs
../gcc-3.0/configure --prefix=/opt/gcc-3.0
make bootstrap
It went through all stages just fine. Died compiling stdlibc++.
