c/191 is still a problem?

hi folks

i seem to be seeing the same problem reported in

  c/191: String literals from unused inline functions are still generated

although this problem has been marked closed.

i am compiling linux-2.4.5, specifically "linux/kernel/user.c", and using the
-S option to produce user.s.  the .rodata section contains several strings
which are referenced only in unused inline functions.  the .LC0, etc labels
on these strings are never referenced anywhere in the generated user.s file.

the problem appears on both:

   $ arm-linux-gcc -v
   Reading specs from /home/rayl/arm/lib/gcc-lib/arm-linux/2.95.3/specs
   gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release)

   $ gcc -v
   Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-mandrake-linux/2.96/specs
   gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Linux-Mandrake 8.0 2.96-0.48mdk)

is this a bug, or am i doing something wrong?
