Internal compiler error under g++-2.95.2 on i686-pc-linux-gnu

I'm getting an internal compiler error when compiling this C++ source
file.  The g++ version appears to be

gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release) (i686-pc-linux-gnu)

The compilation architecture is i686-pc-linux-gnu.  I get similar
output on a current Debian system running

GNU C++ version 2.95.4 20010604 (Debian prerelease) (i386-linux)

I do get successful compilation out of the codesourcery.com gcc
prerelease page.  The command line I used in all cases was

g++ -Wall -g -v gen.ii >gen.log 2>&1
