Presumably, the error message is somewhat longer than this.

Anyway, if you ran into the problem that most users of Mandrake did,
the solution, IIRC, is to unset (or unsetenv, if you use a csh-like
shell) LANG, LC_ALL and LC_COLLATE during the build, or to install the
patch at http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2001-07/msg00153.html
