bootstrap comparison failure on alpha

OK.  Are you able to figure out why?  I don't have an alpha to play
with...  I am presently bootstrapping on IRIX, which also failed due
to the alignment problems, but since Solaris already seems fixed,
that's a good hint that something else is afoot, perhaps unrelated to
my changes...
