The problem is the last line in V3's tests_flags script, which assumes that
passing -n to echo will suppress the newline.  On OS'es where the /bin/sh
is weird, or the echo isn't builtin and conforming, or the external binary
isn't conforming -- at least I think -n is a conformance requirement --
the -n isn't interpreted by 'echo' as a flag.  It gets included in the
string being echo'ed.

The mkcheck script is doing

    set `tests_flags stuff`

and the -n is at the beginning of the string.  So it gets passed back up
and interpreted by 'set' instead.

There are three or four ways around this, but I don't know which is
preferred here.
