Well, strictly speaking it's implementation dependent for which
characters ICHAR will return the "obvious" number.

However, it is certainly true that g77-2.96 (a Red Hat release) did
ICHAR different from previous releases.

Fortunately, the problem was found and fixed before the 3.0 release;
please use that one (or rather, the new 3.0.1 release).
