Saying

   ~/egcs/configure --prefix=$HOME/gnu --enable-languages=c++ --disable-nls --with-gnu-as --with-gnu-ld --enable-shared

results in

  Configure in /tmp/3.1/gcc failed, exiting.

Source is mainline freshly upadted.  This appears on

   sel% uname -a
   SunOS sel 5.7 Generic_106541-12 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise
