No Profile for egcs-2.91.66

Hello, I don't know if this is a bug or a kernel issue, but I can not
produce
a gmon.out file to be used with gprof with gcc of egcs-2.91.66 on RedHat 6.2
Kernel 2.2.14-5.0.  The following syntax does not work:

myhost % gcc hello_world.c -o hello_world -pg -g

or

myhost % gcc hello_world.c -o hello_world -pg
