c compilation error message/exception

I am getting the following message (error/exception) when I tried to compile
a simple c file.

gcc: installation problem, cannot exec 'as' : A file or directory in the
path name does not exist.


Command: /usr/local/bin/gcc test.c

OS: AIX 4.3.3

GCC Version: 2.95 19990728 (release)

I got the same message with GCC version 2.95.2 also. I got the binaries from
the bull website. Your help is appreciated.
