g77 does not compile this program:

> g77 -c a.for
>a.for: In program `wk2la':
>a.for:2:
> 1000 FORMAT (1X,'ENTER THE NAME OF THE DATA (.ODF ASSUMED):'\)
> ^
>Unrecognized character at (^) [info -f g77 M LEX]
>a.for:2:
> 1000 FORMAT (1X,'ENTER THE NAME OF THE DATA (.ODF ASSUMED):'\)
> ^
>Missing close-parenthese(s) in FORMAT statement at (^)

MS Fortran however accepts this program.
