Oh.  But of course GNU ld and Solaris ld don't use the same
command-line option for the version script.  Blah.  I wonder
how hard that is to notice at that point...

collect2 is always needed.  Not for constructors et all 
with gnu ld (or a sensible object file format), but for
template repository madness.
