You can't use recent snapshots as the bootstrapping compiler, at least
not on Solaris. The compiler that's used to build stage1 must be 2.95.2
or older. Once stage1 is built, you're good to go.

I reported this last month:

    http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-bugs/2000-10/msg00380.html
    http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-bugs/2000-10/msg00388.html
    http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-bugs/2000-10/msg00403.html

Now I use 2.95.2 to build 2.97, and then 2.97 to build everything else.

I've occasionally had brief luck with snapshots since 2.95.2 as the stage1
compiler, but I wouldn't recommend snapshots for production use (especially
at NASA -- I really don't want to read in the paper years from now that
the new Mars Pathfinder Mark II refuses to send back any data other than
"Internal compiler error, please see gcc.gnu.org for instructions...")
