Thanks for your bug report. The mainline compiler (2.96 20000511
(experimental)) says

In file included from varmmP.hh:20,
                 from io/misc.cc:23:
varmm.hh:96: invalid use of undefined type `class VarmmError'
varmm.hh:40: forward declaration of `class VarmmError'

so the bug appears to be fixed.
