GCC consumes infinite amounts of memory

Hi,
When compiling any recent linux kernel (2.3.99preX, for X=1,2,3,4,5 or 6)
with the attached .config file, gcc starts to use infinite amounts of
memory. When "-O2" is replaced with "-O1", this is not the case.
GCC version is 2.95.2 (20000313) [current Debian/Woody distribution]
System: i386 (Dual Celeron, SMP machine with 96 Mb ram and 1Gbyte swap)
