gcc will not build

Upon closer inspection of the build failure I reported a few hours
ago, I see that the failed 'mv' commands have nothing to do with it.
The problem is just that Make uses a specs file with xgcc that doesn't
tell where any of the start files, C library, etc. are on my system.
What can I do about this?  The specs file for the installed gcc is
right, but I guess this bootstrap process doesn't use that.
