Current CVS gcc fails: Internal compiler error in `Fixup_var_refs_1'

gcc version 2.96 20000317 (experimental) fails to compile CVS glibc 2.1.90.
It fails in sysdeps/unix/getlogin_r.c with:

sysdeps/unix/getlogin_r.c: In ../function `getlogin_r':
