I don't think this would be that easy to do.  Since libtool is used as
part of the library build process, taking it away would require some
hacking to use an alternate mechanism to create shared libraries.  I
don't see much point in doing that.  And, as Tom said, there already
is a dirty hack in place to work around the problem I mentioned; the
new experimental libtool stuff is just supposed to make it cleaner.
