Trouble wit a new install on Solaris 8

I am having trouble using ./configure (on every program I try to
compile)


Here's what I get:


./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc  ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler
cannot create executables.


I have tried several different versions of the gcc compiler as well as
several different programs to compile, every time I get this error.
What am I doing wrong? Am I missing an environment var or something?
