ICE with current CVS on an i686

Current CVS tree won't bootstrap on an i686-pc-linux.  
'Make bootstrap' dies on stage2 with:

stage1/xgcc -Bstage1/ -B/home/gaby/i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ -c  -DIN_GCC
   -W -Wall -Wtraditional -O2 -g -O2  -DHAVE_CONFIG_H
