C compiler error

When ever I try to run ./configure I get the following error:

checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works...no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem : C compiler cannot
create executables.

I'm running RH 6.1, I have reinstalled the egcs packages that are on the
RedHat 6.1 cd but still no luck.
Can anyone please help
