I got it last night, but solved it by re-auto*-ing in libstdc++-v3,
essentially:

    cd libstdc++-v3
    aclocal && autoconf && autoheader && automake

I had assumed that was fixing a symptom, not fixing the problem, but...
did somebody change a generated file instead of the corresponding input file?
