Problem compiling glibc with gcc 2.95.2 on Red Hat Linux 6.x

I have built gcc from the source rpm at
ftp://ftp.labs.redhat.com/rawhide/SRPMS/SRPMS/gcc-2.95.2-3.src.rpm and
installed the resulting binaries on Red Hat Linux 6.1 (with selected
upgrades from RHL 6.2 including glibc)

[summer@possum java]$ rpm -qa | grep gcc
gcc-c++-2.95.2-3
gcc-chill-2.95.2-3
gcc-2.95.2-3
[summer@possum java]$ rpm -qa | grep glibc
glibc-devel-2.1.3-15
compat-glibc-5.2-2.0.7.2
glibc-2.1.3-15
[summer@possum java]$

I then tried to build the source rpm at
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/redhat-6.1/SRPMS/SRPMS/compat-glibc-5.2-2.0.7.1.src.rpm ; the build fails with this error:

Neither does gcc 2.95 compile glibc-2.1.3:
