GCC is documented as generating the same debug info as the vendor
supplied compiler and working when the vendor tools whenever possible.

In this case it is simply bugs that are preventing the compiler from working,
so I think we should instead fix the bugs instead of punting and using a
different debugging format.

Furthermore, if we are going to switch debugging formats, I recommend we
switch to dwarf2, not stabs.
