cross-building. How's it supposed to work?

It looks like cross-builds are broken yet again :-(

Trying to compile a thumb-elf gcc-2.96 (from CVS) with newlib results in
the following error:

gnumake[2]: Leaving directory `/home/rearnsha/gnu/egcs/thumb-elf/gcc/intl'
rm -rf include; mkdir include
chmod a+rx include
TARGET_MACHINE=thumb-unknown-elf; srcdir=`cd ../../../../gnusrc/egcs-cross/
gcc; pwd`; \
INSTALL_ASSERT_H=install-assert-h; SHELL=/bin/sh ;\
export TARGET_MACHINE srcdir INSTALL_ASSERT_H SHELL ; \
/bin/sh ./fixinc.sh `pwd`/include /home/rearnsha/gnu/egcs/install/SunOS5/th
umb-elf/sys-include
Fixing headers into /home/rearnsha/gnu/egcs/thumb-elf/gcc/include for
thumb-unknown-elf target
./fixinc.sh: /home/rearnsha/gnu/egcs/install/SunOS5/thumb-elf/sys-include:
does not exist

Of course .../thumb-elf/sys-include doesn't exist at this point, I haven't
got far enough to do a "make install" yet.

How is this supposed to work? Or is fixincludes not supposed to run under
these circumstances? If it shouldn't, how do I stop it?

R.
