egcs-19990913 build error on Solaris 2.7 x86

The make bootstrap fails on what seems to be an assembly syntax error. The 
following commands were used for the build:

/tmp/egcs-19990913/configure i686-sun-solaris2.7 \
--enable-shared --enable-haifa --enable-threads --prefix=/opt/egcs \
--without-gnu-as --without-gnu-ld --srcdir=/tmp/egcs-19990913

make bootstrap

The build fails at this point:

_fixunsdfdi

         aline 79        : syntax error
         aline 85        : syntax error
make[2]: *** [libgcc2.a] Error 1

Preceding this higher up in the build are a number of such lines:

/usr/include/sys/isa_defs.h:315: #error "ISA not supported"
