assignment problem with doubles: getting -NaN unexpectedly

I'm wondering what it will take to get this corrected.  I've corrected it in 
my copy, except for the non-standard functions which don't get used.  I'd be 
glad to correct and test them if that would further the cause, but we're off 
topic in an area which is more glibc than gcc.  It's a little difficult to 
sell linux and gcc as reliable software when the most often used library 
continues to carry these known bugs, and no one can agree about fixing them.
