Help! Compiling cross-compiler cygnus -> linux

I'm trying for a week now to compile a cross compiler from cygnus
(i686-pc-cygnus32) to linux (i686-pc-linux-gnu) and failing miserably.

I've tried the instructions in the cross-compiler FAQ and on
http://www.xraylith.wisc.edu/~khan/software/gnu-win32/cygwin-to-linux-cross-howto.txt

since the latter are more specific, and also got me further, I'll stick
with them. The problem seems to be while configuring libiberty as part
of the make in gcc-obj. It breaks down complaining that the compiler
doesn't work.

I've tried this with binary mounts but it fails much earlier on (during
the configure in gcc) so I'm sticking with text mounts for now.

Help, anyone?
