gcc-2.95.2 fails make bootstrap on Digital Unix 4.0D

GCC version: 2.95.2
System Type: Digital UNIX V4.0D  (Rev. 878); Mon Feb 22 18:48:41 EST 1999 

After downloading and untarring gcc-2.92.2.tar.gz I followed these steps:

$ cd src/gcc-2.95.2
$ mkdir build
$ cd build
$ ../configure --enable-languages=c++
$ gmake bootstrap

Bootstrap comparison failure!
alias.o differs
alpha.o differs
bitmap.o differs

[...]

cp/typeck.o differs
cp/typeck2.o differs
cp/xref.o differs
gmake[1]: *** [compare] Error 1
gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/a/users/ahobson/src/gcc-2.95.2/build/gcc'
gmake: *** [bootstrap] Error 2


This same procedure works fine on a Digital UNIX 4.0F box.
